Man, I relate to this post on an almost cellular level, Dan. I was a DJ at an alternative venue for a number of years and my go-to selections for the 'post-bands, midnight onwards' music was essentially just shit I listened to in high school: pop-punk, emo, nu-metal nostalgia, and the occasional screamo crossover hit. Of course, thanks to endless weekends of repetition, this means that "The Middle" is now up there with other tracks like "Dance, Dance," "Cute Without the 'E'," and "My Friends Over You" that I absolutely cannot stand, despite them being inherently great songs. Plus, in my humble opinion, the B-side of 'Bleed American' has all the real deep cut gold. That four-track run from "If You Don't, Don't" to "The Authority Song"? Insane.

"I genuinely can’t tell anymore whether my aversion to the song stems from its complete oversaturation in pop culture or whether I don’t like it as a piece of recorded music" - so many songs have died this death and it fucks up perfectly good albums and encores. A Futurama Fry meme if there ever was one.
