This was a great read and it brought back a bunch of memories, though I must take small issue with the assertation that Empire Records isn't quotable. I have added the following to my vernacular:
"not on Rex Manning day"
"what's with you today?" - "what's with today, today?"
"I don't feel the need to explain my art to you, Warren"
"shock me, shock me, shock me with that deviant behavior"
the Ryan Reynolds take.... feels so good to read that and know it's not just this crazy thought in my brain where it's so obvious to me but seems like no one else wants to acknowledge it. Thanks for that.
The newsletter is such a beautiful thing. Almost ten years of friendship and I am only now learning that you almost died trying to watch Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back.
I remember the recurring joke about the back of a Volkswagen all too well... (iirc the concluding reference to it involves Ben Affleck being raped in prison!?!)
I got off the train before Strikes Back but the rest of this resonated so hard for me! I was scrolling and reading a lot of my own thoughts! I’ve been very scared to rewatch this for all the same reasons. A little sad so many of us were die hards for KS then we just … grew up?
Had no idea Kevin Smith made a movie this year. I saw him do stand-up/spoken word at a comedy club in SLC literally last week, and he did not mention it a single time.
I think as long as you stop at jay and silent bob strike back his career is pretty unimpeachable. The movies aren’t all ‘good’ but I’m not embarrassed to like them. After that it gets cringey. But man those first five are great memories. Snoogans.
This was a great piece. I also have enormous nostalgic love for Mallrats. It was always my favorite Kevin Smith movie, even when it was cooler to prefer Clerks. But hey, the heart wants what the heart wants.

"damn the man, save the empire'
Came here to say exactly this! ☺️

A schooner is a sailboat stupid head.
Even now in middle age, this pops into my head in any scenario where people are talking about sailboats.

Re: Superman jizz. Was a shout-out given to Larry Nivens’ 1969 “Man of Steel, Woman of Kleenex” essay?
And that soundtrack, man.
I think poopoo caca peepee is very funny so Henry licking his fingers clean is easily recalled decades later.
Glad to read someone else with my appreciation of Clerks: The Animated Series. The quotes are already coming back to me.
"We may have some trouble with Allen Iverson."
