Three years ago, I got coffee with Mark Hoppus and he asked if I’d help him write his memoir. Actually, he opened a blank notebook on the table, put his pen to the first line, and said, “Okay, Dan, how do I write a book?” For three years I guided him up the mountain like a word sherpa, making sure he never stumbled. And at a certain point he found his footing and took off running. It was truly a joy and an honor to be along for the journey. Today, at long last, FAHRENHEIT-182 is out in the world. [champagne bottles pop and confetti rains from the sky forever]
This weekend, Mark got bi-coastal profiles in the New York Times and the Los Angeles Times. He even inducted the word “shreddiest” into the paper of record.
The FAHRENHEIT-182 book tour starts this week in New York. A lot of the shows have sold out but there are a few tickets left in some cities. (We added a second show in London!)
From the beginning, Mark was very specific that he wasn’t going to subject people to boring ass book events. He wanted to give people a cool show that felt like a living version of the book. So for the last month we wrote and rehearsed a 90-minute show with our crew. We tested it out last week in Los Angeles and it safely passed inspection. I can’t wait to bring it on the road.
Hm okay what else? I never know what to say on publication day. How do I neatly sum up the thing that has consumed my entire life for three years? For a long time, a book feels like a secret language that only you and your editor speak. And then one day it doesn’t belong to you anymore. It belongs to the world. Now it’s officially YOUR problem.
I want to tell you what an incredible experience it was to work with Mark. Or how proud I am of what we came up with. I want to tell you about how even after reading it several hundred times the book still makes me both laugh and cry. But you can just pick up a copy and see for yourself. It’s all there on the page.
I never even know what to do with myself on publication day or how to celebrate. The day SELLOUT hit stores in 2021 I just sort of drove around to bookstores and casually stood next to the book which happened to be turned open to the author photo. But today at least I have a mission. Mark is on the East Coast doing press and I am currently hopping a plane to meet him there.
The only cogent thought my brain can muster on days like today is that I am so fucking grateful. Grateful to Mark and his team for entrusting me with this project. Grateful to you the reader for giving a shit. Grateful to my friends for their support. Grateful that I get to do this for a living.
Thank you thank you thank you.
(Also, to celebrate the release of FAHRENHEIT-182, I am running a sale here at ZERO CRED. Just a buck a month will get you a paid subscription. I will be giving away copies of the book signed by Mark and myself to a few random paid subscribers this weekend. I will also be doing a video chat with paid subscribers as soon as I have a break in the tour.)

This man took up 98% of the space on my teenage bedroom walls and still takes up about 98% of my adult brain. Can’t wait to spend the day reading and weeping over his life story, and excited to see the show you’ve put together in Philly! Happy Book Birthday!
I’ve listened to the audiobook twice so far.
It was such an awesome listen!
Being a musician who frequently plays DIY punk clubs, trying to break through; it was motivating to hear the story of a man/band I’ve looked up to most of my life doing exactly that and becoming who they are now!
